Johnson & Johnson’s Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan 2021-2023

J&J acknowledges Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples as the first inhabitants and Traditional Owners of Australia together with their continuing spiritual connection to land and sea.

We are honored to commit ourselves to our third Reconciliation Action Plan (RAP) for the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in Australia.

Johnson & Johnson is guided by the values in Our Credo. Put simply, Our Credo challenges us to put the needs and wellbeing of the people we serve first. Specifically, Paragraph three of Our Credo emphasises our commitment to support the communities in which we live and work, and to the world community as well.

The Johnson & Johnson Innovate Reconciliation Action Plan provides a framework to the development of deeper engagement with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities through improved cultural awareness. It also allows our organisation to be aspirational and innovative to help us gain a deeper understanding of our sphere of influence and establish the best approach to advance reconciliation.

Our vision for reconciliation, is for an Australian society that values, recognises and is connected to its Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures, heritages and histories.

Our vision extends to an Australia where health inequities are a thing of the past, and where Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples live a life free of racism, oppression and injustice, with high levels of health, wellbeing and economic prosperity.

To commemorate the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies’ first Innovate RAP, we acquired the artwork, Ancestors by Sarrita King and Tarisse King. Followed by the commissioning of the artwork, Embracing Our Country Through Connection, a bespoke collaborative piece of art painted by the King Sisters that represents our inherent interdependence with the land signifying the importance of preservation and care for the world around us. It pays homage to our ancestors as well as connecting us to the future ahead.

Our Reconciliation Journey

We started our journey towards reconciliation in 2013 when we joined Supply Nation and began our supplier diversity work. In 2014, we commenced developing our Reflect Reconciliation Action Plan 2015-2016 and subsequently in 2018 followed on with our Innovate RAP. We are excited to continue our journey with our third RAP for 2021-2023. Although there might be gaps in time with our RAPs being developed, the journey towards reconciliation and our work in it continues outside of the formal RAP process and dates. Over the life of our 2nd RAP, we’ve been yarning with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples and Elders, communities and organisations and we would like to acknowledge them and say thank you for trusting J&J to walk with you. Our approach has always been one of continual learning, discussions and growth and as such, this 3rd Reconciliation Action Plan is borne out of those on-going discussions with ideas and advice incorporated as we continue to walk together on the path towards reconciliation and unity.

The Four Pillars of our RAP

These pillars are the foundation for building our vision, and are underpinned by the values of respect, creating opportunities, building positive relationships within our sphere of influence, and ensuring accountability through strong governance. They are supported by the principles of collaboration and leadership.
The pillars include:

  • Increasing cultural competency
  • Advancing health equity
  • Expanding supplier diversity
  • Creating employment opportunities
