Breaking down the barriers to gender equality:
Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in Australia recognised

 

Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in Australia receives 2017-18 ‘Employer of Choice for Gender Equality’ citation from the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WEGA) for the first time.

One of only 120 organisations across Australia to receive this citation in 2017-18.

21 February 2018 – The Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in Australia is today pleased to announce that the company has been granted the Employer of Choice for Gender Equality (EOCGE) citation in 2017-18 by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency (WGEA).

“We’re thrilled to have been granted the Employer of Choice for Gender Equality by the Workplace Gender Equality Agency. We’re proud of our extensive support programs, initiatives and policies that enable both women and men working within our companies to thrive in their careers and personal lives,” said Doug Cunningham, Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Pacific.

WGEA is an Australian Government agency created by the Workplace Gender Equality Act 2012. The WGEA EOCGE citation recognises Australian organisations that demonstrate best practice in, and are actively committed to, achieving gender equality in their workplaces. Only 120 organisations across Australia received a citation for their policies and practices during 2017-18.

“We believe that building a culture of inclusion and innovation needs to be intentional,” said Sue Martin, Managing Director of Johnson & Johnson Medical Devices Australia and New Zealand.

“As an organisation, we represent the market in which we work and operate, in relation to age, gender, race, religion, sexual preference, disability and nationality. With a focus on diversity and inclusion, we must ensure that we embed a culture that not only treats everyone equally, but actively seeks input from all. Doing this will lead to more robust dialogue, smarter decisions and ultimately, sustainable growth in the short and long term,” said Ms Martin.

As the Asia-Pacific leader of Johnson & Johnson’s Women’s Leadership and Inclusion Employee Network, Ms Martin collaborates with country leaders to not only grow awareness but to advocate for real change and inclusion of women in leadership.

To receive the citation from WGEA, the company had to demonstrate its gender equality practices across a number of key areas, including leadership, learning and development, gender remuneration gaps, flexible working and other initiatives to support family responsibilities, employee consultation, preventing sex-based harassment and discrimination, and targets improving gender equality outcomes.

The Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in Australia and New Zealand is helping to break down the barriers to gender equality in the local business and healthcare sector, boasting a number of important achievements as it moves towards embracing and promoting gender equality within the company and more broadly, within the industry.

Some of the company’s initiatives to support gender equality include:

  • An enhanced parental leave policy supporting 14 weeks paid leave for Birth mothers, 8 weeks paid Bonding Leave for partners and 8 weeks paid Adoption Leave for adoptive parents.
  • Flexible working practices, coupled with extensive leave options.
  • Practices that encourage gender equality in succession planning and learning and development programs.
  • Supporting employees experiencing Domestic and Family Violence, with access to paid leave.
  • Reviews and strategies to help ensure equal opportunity in compensation, hiring, development, and advancement.
  • Attracting and retaining diverse talent.
  • Building inclusive leadership competencies.

According to WGEA Director, Libby Lyons, it is this type of innovative thinking that led to the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in Australia receiving its EOCGE citation in 2017-18.

“This year, I am particularly delighted to see some of the innovative and exciting initiatives by our EOCGE citation holders on such issues as flexibility, paid parental leave, supporting women in leadership and addressing gender pay gaps,” said Ms Lyons.

“I congratulate all the 2017-18 citation holders for their commitment and recognition of benefits improved gender equality can bring to their business. These employers are setting the benchmark for other Australian workplaces to follow,” Ms Lyons said.

Although it is the first year that the Johnson & Johnson Family of Companies in Australia has achieved an WEGA EOCGE citation, the company’s philosophy since 1943 - demonstrated through its Credo - has been to accept everyone who has a unique experience or background and support them to create a deep sense of belonging with other colleagues in the business. This is fundamentally a part of the Johnson & Johnson DNA and has stood the test of time for over 75 years:

Bruce Goodwin, Managing Director of Janssen Australia and New Zealand reinforced the company’s continued focus on gender equality, stating that building a highly inclusive culture creates a deep sense of belonging for all employees.
